Maribel Ruiz, the owner of Skin & Body by Beauty of Wax was named the “Small Business Person of the Year” by the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.
She began her business in her condominium and developed it into the successful operation it is now. Beauty of Wax is based in Hollywood at 2040 Polk Street and has a location in Plantation.
“I started at my home 16 years ago and now I have a location that I am very happy with,” said Ruiz. “I am very involved with my community and non-profit organizations. This business is my dream.”
Skin & Body by Beauty of Wax is a full-service spa offering hair removal, facials, body sculpting, massages, microblading and many other services.
Skin & Body by Beauty of Wax has found a permanent home at 2040 Polk St.
After setting up shop in Downtown Hollywood 15 years ago, Skin & Body by Beauty of Wax has found a permanent home at 2040 Polk St., and the public is invited to the grand opening celebration on April 21.
“It’s going to be my own place. We just bought the building. I’m so excited,” said business owner Maribel Ruiz, Beauty Coordinator at Skin & Body by Beauty of Wax. “After 15 years, we finally got our new home, and we want to share it and celebrate with the Hollywood community.”
The party from 6 to 8 p.m. will feature music, raffles, the Street Stiles mobile clothing boutique, and complimentary hors d’oeuvres provided by Mr. Pasta and Downtown Hollywood’s Bistro 1902 and Lola’s on Harrison.
Ruiz started her thriving business 16 years ago in the living room of her tiny condo. From there she moved into a location in Downtown Hollywood. Five years ago, she added a second location in Plantation. Skin & Body by Beauty of Wax – formerly known simply as Beauty of Wax – attracts clients from throughout Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Over the years it has expanded its services along with its operating space.
The new 2,400-square-foot Polk Street location is much larger than the current 1,700-square-foot space on Tyler Street, and will accommodate a sauna and a private area with its own bathroom and shower for pre-wedding parties, spa parties and other group functions. Other new services include permanent makeup, fillers such as Botox and Juvederm, temporary tattoos and hair extensions, coloring, cuts and blow dries.
The unisex salon, whose slogan is “Where South Florida Comes to Get Sexy!,” offers an extensive menu of services: body sculpting treatments (including ultrasonic cavitation and lymphatic drainage), body wraps (chocolate, coffee, weight-loss and more), a body cleansing detox program, facials (with optional microdermabrasion or lip-and-eye contour lift), massage therapy, SouthBeach Lightening Gel Treatment, and face, body and Brazilian waxing.
The Polk Street location will feature a calming color scheme, candles and incense “to relax the clients when they come in,” said Ruiz, who prides herself on treating her customers with the best service possible. A licensed cosmetologist and a facial specialist who belongs to the National Cosmetology Association and The Society for Clinical & Medical Hair Removal, Inc., Ruiz has completed training in skin care treatments, hair styling, eyebrow design, specialized waxing, electrolysis, laser hair removal and body contour treatments.
Ruiz and her husband Luis Guevara, who helps with events and social media for the business, are very involved in the Hollywood community. Guevara is the president of the Downtown Hollywood Business Association (DHBA), while Ruiz chairs the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s Spanish Speaking Leads Group. She also is an organizer of the monthly Downtown Hollywood’s Party with a Purpose to benefit local charities.
The grand opening celebration on April 21 will feature raffles of items provided by Downtown Hollywood businesses. Gift certificates have been donated by Bistro 1902, Mickey Byrne’s Irish Pub & Restaurant, La Huaca Peruvian Cuisine, Embrujo Wine, Ends Meat Eatery, Crowne Plaza Hollywood Beach Resort and Gino’s Italian Market.
The party will be a family event, in keeping with Skin & Body by Beauty of Wax’s philosophy. “We’re a family business,” Ruiz said. “We do have people who work here who are not family, but we treat them like they are.”
Ruiz said her family business has found its special home in Downtown Hollywood.
“We love Downtown Hollywood,” she said. “It’s the diversity – people from different countries, the international restaurants, businesses and festivals. Downtown Hollywood is active and exciting. We have so much here. It is a great place to open a business.”
